Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei, said on Tuesday that the US governm

Ren’s comments came after the US Commerce Department said on Monday that it gave Hu

hina deeply disappointed by US tariff planpointm

hina voiced deep disappointment late on Wednesday about Washington’s plan to raise tariffs on Chinese imports on Fr

iday, saying that it will take necessary counter-measures if the US tariffs increase takes effect.

The planned tariffs increase on $200 billion worth of Chinese

imports from 10 percent to 25 percent was filed by the Office of the US Trade Representative, and

the filing appeared on Wednesday in the Federal Register, the Associated Press reported.

In response, an unnamed spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on the ministry’s website that escal

ating trade friction does not serve the interests of people in the two countries and the world.

Major US trade bodies have urged the Trump administration to avoid further escalating tensions by suddenly incr

easing tariffs on Friday, while experts said it’s sensible for China to continue negotiations in a measured way.

I want to go to school in another province. That way, I won’t

feel like an orphan,” he wrote in the letter, referring to special classes established for Tibetan students in schools

outside the region that allow them to share equal teaching resources with their “inland” counterparts.

“All my classmates would be separated from their parents, so I wouldn’t want to have parents.”

Nyima Gyaltsan rarely shares his feelings, fearing that he may be mocked and treated differently, but Qian, who arrived from

affluent Jiangsu province five years ago, is an exception, even though he only began teaching the boy last semester.

“When Teacher Qian learned I was an orphan, he tried to ease my mental stress and help me

study,” Nyima Gyaltsan said, adding that he has spoken privately with Qian several times.

As the boy has no family members to help with his school work, Qian told him to high

light anything he didn’t understand in any subject and he would find teachers to help him.

“Teacher Qian told me I can always turn to him, or talk with him every Wednesday at noon if I come across any difficulties or stress,” he said.

hina will continue to suspend extra tariffs on

The State Council said on Sunday that China would continue to suspend additional tariffs on US

vehicles and auto parts after April 1, in a goodwill gesture following a US decision to delay tariff hikes on Chinese imports.

In December, China said it would suspend additional 25 percent tariffs on US-made vehi

cles and auto parts for three months, following a truce in a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

The State Council, or China’s cabinet, said the move was aimed at “continuing to create a good atmosphere for the ongoing trade negotiations between both sides”.

elt and Road Initiative serves to promote multilateral cooperation: China Daily editorial

The most common charges laid at China’s door are the Belt and Road is a debt trap and it is all about Chi

Retail sales of local government bonds attract eager

Chinese local government bonds worth 1.4 billion yuan ($208.5 million) were snapped up by retail investors within a single day, after counter sales in banks we

re made available for the first time. The fundraising will help supplement a broader fiscal deficit this year, analysts said.

On Monday, individuals in China were able to purchase bonds issued by t

he Zhejiang provincial government (five-year term, 3.32 percent coupon rate) and the N

ingbo city government (three-year term, 3.04 percent coupon rate). Proceeds from the sales will be used for land purchases (300 million yuan) and shantytown renovations (1.1 billion yuan), acc

ording to a notice on the website of China Central Depository and Clearing, a clearinghouse under the central bank.

The minimum investment amount for retail investors is 100 yuan, lower than most wealth management products issu

ed by commercial banks. Previously, individual investors could only purchase bonds issued by the central government, kno

wn as treasury bonds. And before Monday, local government bonds were traded mainly in the interbank market.

lawmakers seize Brexit agenda in bid to break deadlock

LONDON – British lawmakers seized a measure of control over the

stalled Brexit process from Prime Minister Theresa May‘s foundering governmeng up a seri

es of votes that could dramatically alter the course of the UK’s departure from the European Union.

The move came after May conceded that Parliament would defeat her twice-rejected divorce deal with the EU again if she put it to a third vote.

With Brexit delayed and the new departure date up in the air, the House of Commons v

oted to give itself temporary control of the parliamentary timetable starting on Wednesday so lawmakers can vote o

n alternatives to May’s withdrawal deal. The government usually controls the scheduling of votes in Parliament.

Lawmakers who backed Monday’s motion, which passed 329-302, hope the planned “indic

ative votes” will narrow the options down to one that can secure majority support. Possible options inclu

de a “soft Brexit” that maintains close economic ties with the EU or scrapping Britain’s departure altogether.
